Top 3 Keys To Effective Writing

The most powerful words are the written words. Spoken words can last for a while but written words are like a never-aging fine wine. Written words get better with time and they produce very great effects that leave one satisfied.

Writing is the act of putting words together in a documented form. Earlier, writing was limited to just hard surfaces and gradually books were produced. Today, writing has moved many steps further as one can write using electronic gadgets like phones, laptops, MacBooks and the likes. This means that writing is such an important aspect of human life that it has to be made better as the days go by.

A writer is a powerful creator. I remember when a friend wrote a book where he gave the antagonist another friend's name and this antagonist was killed in the book. When we got to talk about the book over a glass of wine, he opened up to me that the friend whose name was given to the antagonist in the book hurt him deeply. The book according to him was inspired by that hurt and he had to get back at the friend by making him the antagonist and killing him in his book. This is both hilarious and interesting. A writer can create nonexistent things and bring them into existence. Some great writers have been called seers because they wrote something and it came to pass. Now, a writer is truly not real. You know why? The reason is because writers live in imagination all their lives. While a writer is seen walking around the street, lots of thoughts are going through his or her mind and he or she is busy creating scenarios, bringing to life things that do not exist and producing imaginative wonders.

Writing is a blessing. It is a gift that precedes gifts. Writing is a pathfinder and can take you to places you never imagined. Writing can grant you access to places you'd ordinarily not have access to. It is important for you to understand who you are as a writer and the power and influence you exude.

There are platforms that can help you write better by giving you the privilege to write in the first place. Writing gets better when it is continuous. The best way to become a better writer is to keep writing. Successful writers are those who are always on the move. As a writer, you can write on social media platforms and freelance platforms like UpMyChain. You can sell your written works or you can write for clients who are interested in what you do and you get paid by them. Writing can chart a career path for a writer provided they are ready to handle the responsibilities that follow. Writing is fun and exciting. Through writing, even the most shy Individuals can effectively express themselves and pass across whatever message they have.

I have selected some keys to effective writing. The idea is to help you become better than you were before reading this. This is going to be very useful to you as a writer or prospective writer. This is perhaps a gift that would keep giving. Let's have a look at the 3 simple keys to effective writing.

1. YOUR AUDIENCE

Before writing, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I writing for myself?
  • What category of people do I intend to reach with this content?
  • How would the people perceive this content?
  • Why am I writing this?
  • Can the readers relate with this content?

A good writer must understand that they are not writing for themselves alone. If your write-up is meant for just you alone, then you may really not have put it in writing in the first place. Your write-up should serve the audience effectively. It is agreed that you'd have to make use of the content yourself but it shouldn't be limited to you. You have to understand the language of those who'd read your content. Understanding their language simply means writing in a way that appeals to them. It means being able to articulate your words and thoughts in such a way that they are able to feel connected to what you are putting down. If your audience is feeling alienated from your content, it means you have failed completely. A content should satisfy the readers and make them yearn for more. Your audience must be carried along. If you are writing for a content meant to be consumed by an Indian populace, then you must appeal to them. Write in a way that they feel you're a part of them. If your content is directed at a French populace, then the ideology and pattern has to be different from that of Indians. You must also be able to meet the unique needs of your French audience. Perhaps your content is meant for a Spanish audience, you must know that the content has to be completely different from those of Indians and the French. So your audience should be considered when you write because they have to influence your writing pattern.

Your audience will give the necessary appraisal to your work. So if they are not satisfied, what happens? What becomes of you when your audience does not even understand what you are writing? Writers are gods because they can capture the minds of readers and keep them glued to a particular content for a very long time. How can you capture the mind of a reader who does not even know what you are writing in the first place?

For 9-5 workers, you'd have to write for you in a certain way using certain terminologies. For freelancers, you have the liberty to employ certain terms that are common to open-minded people. Now, you see the importance of carrying your audience along at all times.

To effectively pass your message to your audience, you must do the following:

  • Know your audience
  • Understand your audience
  • Use appropriate terms for every given audience
  • Employ emotional intelligence
  • Be in control

2. HAVE A SPECIFIC TARGET

Every content must have a purpose. If I walk into a room full of professionals and I start talking to them about football when it's work hour, what exactly am I trying to achieve? Perhaps I just want to talk or I want to display my oratory skills or I want to show them that I have great knowledge of the game of football even when it's the wrong time? If you analyze this, you'd understand that there's no purpose here. You know why? The reason is that, a misguided and mistimed purpose is no purpose at all.

As a writer, you must have one or more things you intend to achieve with your content. That's the target or purpose of the writeup. It could be a simple message, a deep information, an advice, a guide or what have you. What matters is that you have a specific target and that it is timely. A purposeful content is a useful one. Before you think of how to pass your message, you should have a message in the first place.

3. CONSISTENCY

If you walk away from the stage, another actor will step right in. Without being told, you must understand that consistency is a virtue that steps you apart and above others. If you want to write effectively, then you must learn to keep writing. Be consistent in churning out great contents time and time again. Whenever you stop writing, there are others waiting by the sidelines to take over. So, why should you stop writing? You have no reason whatsoever to do that. A good writer must learn to keep writing. Write when you feel like it. Write when you don't feel like it. Write until you feel like it. Writing is a beautiful passion. When you understand that your effectiveness and efficiency is directly proportional to your consistency, you won't wait to be told to keep writing. They say that readers are leaders but writers make readers. Therefore writers are kingmakers.
